Alison Johnston Mistak became AYA Executive Director in March 2005. She has been involved with AYA since 2001 and served as the Director of Partner Development during 2004-05. Johnston has visited AYA partners on several occassions and has traveled extensively throughout the world. She holds a master's degree in social work and is currently licensed as a clinical social worker. Through counseling, community organization, advocacy and psychotherapy, Johnston has worked with a wide variety of social issues including, HIV/AIDS, mental health, chemical dependency, vocational rehabilitation and family violence. During her first trip to Kenya in September 2002, she conducted a 4-day counseling seminar for AYA partners. The expereince changed her life and she became dedicated to helping AIDS orphans and children in developing countries. She moved the AYA office to Maryville, TN where she works with Alice Johnston as Director of Development and Sarah Shepard as the Financial Director. |
Allison Cohen A recent cum laude graduate of Douglas Mac Arthur High School in San Antonio, Texas, Allison Cohen left a lasting legacy on her alma mater. A sophomore in 2003, Allison was troubled that her high school was home to vandalism and litter. Although newly renovated, the school continued to lose its landscaping and be ridden with litter. That fall, Allison presented her principal with a charter and mission statement proposing a new student organization. Keep Mac Beautiful (KMB) is an organization committed to the preservation and ongoing beautification of the Mac Arthur campus and facilities. Read More
Maurice Curie (Mort) is a former building contractor who retired in 1989 and has spent a major part of his time since then doing Disaster Work of rebuilding homes through the Church of the Brethren Disaster Services and other non-profit organizations. He travels to the sites and supervises volunteers, sometimes a month at a time. Mort has volunteered at over 50 sites in states ranging from Kansas to Mississippi. This is in addition to his work at the East Chippewa Church of the Brethren and for CAMO-Central American Medical Organization with central headquarters in Orrville, Oh. |
